Beyond Quartz: Why We chose Alexia Granite for this Modern Shaker Kitchen

In the world of kitchen design, the pendulum swings. For years, the market has been dominated by the uniform, predictable beauty of man-made quartz. But recently, we’ve seen a shift. Homeowners are returning to the unique, chaotic beauty of natural stone.

Our latest project, featuring 20mm Alexia Granite, is a testament to why natural stone remains the king of the kitchen. It bridges the gap between the ultra-modern utility homeowners need and the organic warmth they crave.

The Challenge

This project wasn’t just about replacing worktops; it was about integration. The client had chosen a bold, dark charcoal shaker-style cabinetry. While stunning, dark cabinets can sometimes suck the light out of a room if paired with the wrong surface.

They needed a worktop that would:

1. Reflect light to brighten the space.
2. Provide warmth to contrast the cool grey tones of the units.
3. Incorporate high-end technical features, specifically a flush-fitted hob.

Our Approach

We selected Alexia Granite. This stone is renowned for its complex palette—a beige base peppered with garnet, grey, and brown minerals. It’s a stone that doesn’t just sit there; it interacts with the room’s lighting.

We opted for a 20mm profile. While 30mm has been the traditional standard for granite, 20mm offers a sleeker, more contemporary silhouette that suits modern shaker designs perfectly.

Key Features & Craftsmanship

The Flush-Fitted Hob

The centrepiece of the kitchen is the island. To keep the lines uninterrupted, we executed a flush-fitted hob cut. This involves routing a rebate into the stone around the cutout, allowing the glass of the induction hob to sit perfectly level with the granite surface.

This isn’t just an aesthetic choice; it’s a functional one. It allows pans to be slid off the heat without lifting, and it makes cleaning as simple as one wipe across the entire surface.

Seamless Window Sills

One of the hallmarks of a high-end installation is how the worktop interacts with the architecture of the room. We installed matching granite window sills that flow directly from the upstands. This creates a visual continuity that draws the eye to the garden view, making the kitchen feel larger and more connected to the outdoors.

The Single Chamfer Edge

To maintain the modern feel, we applied a single chamfer edge detail. This is a small, 45-degree bevel that removes the sharpness of the arris. It’s crisp and minimalist, avoiding the ornate look of a bullnose edge which might have dated the design.

Overcoming Obstacles

Working with 20mm granite requires a different approach to handling than thicker slabs. While incredibly strong once installed, the slabs have less tensile strength during transport.

The “Unpolished Sink Cut Out” also presented a specific requirement. The client opted for a ceramic drop-in sink. While this covers the internal edge of the stone, the fit must still be precise. If the cutout is too large, the sink rim won’t seal; too small, and the ceramic (which can vary in size during firing) won’t fit. We templated precisely to ensure a tolerance of less than 2mm.

The Transformation

The final result is a kitchen that feels grounded. The polished surface of the Alexia granite bounces light around the room, counteracting the light absorption of the dark cabinets. The 100mm upstands frame the worktop beautifully, protecting the walls while adding a border of natural stone texture.
